Now to episode 14

    Episode 14a:  Director's Rut

This episode is focused on Luan who's other love is theater. The episode starts with a scene at a comedy club and I was kind of expecting Luan to burst through, but it was just her writing a play. It was a fun scene. Anyway, Luan is writing a play in the hopes that she'll, read the plot, she's going to win so let's move on. The idea is that the drama teacher, Mrs. Bernardo decides to be he hands off and let the chips fall, but she lurks in the episode, I kind of like her her character she's a big hammy character, and she brings a fun energy. More on her later.

The episode starts with Luan trying to direct  her play, now maybe this doing it with friends is hard because she has a hard time saying no when her friends suggest changing parts of the play that she worked on. We see through this part of Luan just going with the flow and letting it go that way.

This makes her confide to her dummy, Mr. Coconuts, which is something she's been shown to do time to time. Some don't like this, and I understand that, but maybe I can give a little thought on something I've thought about it. I think this is a good way to show her character expressing thoughts she'd not say otherwise, Coconuts is like her outlet and her thinking board. It give something to her character that shows her more insecure side. Her idea is to use him to be more assertive, we seen this type of plot idea done in shows like "Spongebob" of course this goes wrong, everyone quits the play, except Benny who is there to tell her that everyone quit.

Mrs. Bernardo  is back. she's been spying the whole time, tells her that Luan really should have spoke up herself when she had a problem. Which is alright message. I think the episode is kind of flat, because I can understand Luan's plight (heh) but the episode's message is a little lost in translation. The idea should be that Luan should have told her playmates (not sure what term would be) that she worked hard on the script and that the moral should be that one should be assertive but not too assertive, but they kind of muddied it with two different tangents mushed together.  It also doesn't help that I really had no investment on why I should care the friends were annoyed by the dummy because it just cuts to Luan finding out they are gone. It's not like Lincoln's friends where I have some already invested knowing them and could see their understanding. I would be on Luan's side as  a viewer because she just didn't want her play to be out of her vision and it didn't seem the friends cared. The only part you can understand is that she went too far with the dummy, but I needed more investment. I do like the quirky teacher she was fun. I give it 6.5/10

More after the Jump

 Episode 14b: Friday Night Fights

Put out my Lisa bias out front, because she's one of my top favorite Louds. I was happy to see an episode with Lisa being paired with another sister, she has done stuff with Lincoln but it's been quiet otherwise.  I like the start of this episode where Lisa is watching the football game and seems invested in it.  Lisa uses statistics and math to figure out how this game where a team is down 52-0 will go. Uhh wait hold on. (This should have been a sports betting episode)

Lynn is sad that her team lost and at dinner I'm going to mention that I love how the episode gives us child like Lisa moments, the part where she uses food to explain football plays was very nice and gave us more to her character. Again I like Lisa because she's an interesting character to me, that she can be a complex character since she's a mixture of being a kid but very smart and aware. Lynn agrees to have Lisa co-coach her team.( I'm not sure, but there's no other coach, it's just Lynn leading the team and then Lisa is there; there's no coach on this team, what is this anarchy?)

Lisa also brings in a robot because reasons. (I'm tired) I'm glad this robot doesn't some how over take the plot, they kind of need to cut back on robot of the week (you get what this means). Anyway, at first Lisa's Amazon AWS strategy works in the idea that she made them lose by only 4 points. (So uhhh what?)

This gives Lisa the idea to do what many professional sports teams have done to mostly bad results, trade players for a dream team. These team members aren't just Lynn's team members but also he friends (and some filler characters to fill out the fillings) and that's the other part of this episode. The idea of a sports team is that there's also bonds with other players; that's why it's a team. Lisa choses players that might work statistically but they have no bond and no reason to work together. (not even money)  This episode isn't saying that Lisa is wrong and Lynn is right, it's more saying that you can do anything  to make a team work but you can't have teamwork if the team doesn't work and have a bond.  I think that's good message.

Lynn is tired (that's my line!) and decides to tell Lisa she doesn't need her anymore. This actually makes Lisa cry. It's a moment that gets to me, her line that she's feels bad that she failed her sister. The next scene, you can see that she was effected by that her eyes are blood shot, it's kind of a brutal look. The episode has this moment has a Peanuts style  moment of reflection, if that was intentional then I'm glad, because that's a more basic element of Peanuts more than anything else. It's a wonderful moment that's not long but well done. The fall morning and Lisa looking around the tree and seeing Lynn's friends having fun moment was well done to show a new morning to bring a new hope around the corner.

Lisa comes back to the football field and Lynn is surprised she showed up , for Lisa to reveal that she got her friends back and is quitting.  Then she shows she's willing to try something else like be the mascot. but Lynn says she doesn't have to do that. Lisa and Lynn figure out how to use both math and heart together. The episode ends with Maddie getting a touch down and Lisa and Lynn getting sports drink (trade marks) poured on them.

I'm glad we got a Lynn and Lisa team up episode,  it was well done and enjoyed seeing these two characters do something together. The  little touches were nice and this is a well done episode. I give 8/10

That's it for now, tune in next time, when we buy a football team and regret it.  Also #ReleasetheLuanCut
