Episode 9a: Home Improvement

This episode has a focus on the slightly minor character named Laird. Laird is part of Ronnie's skate borad team and kind of part of her apparently large collection of human friends. It is interesting to see Laird get focused on (with R.A and the group joining in) for an episode.  The friend group has their own thing where they have movie nights and go to each friend's house to watch movies.  This time it's Laird's turn and Laird doesn't really want to, because he is embarrassed by his house. (Now let's play Why would that be?  Is Laird embarrassed  because  a) he lives in a shabby house  (remember this is a children's cartoon)   b)  He's rich  c) He lives in a trash can and yells at street pedestrians ; keep thinking, while we hold to the answer for later)

Ronnie Anne says that money doesn't matter to her and friends after  Laird says it's a money thing ( I don't the answer is C)  then Ronnie Anne's dad calls. he's on vacation. (Good then why did he show up?)  This is to drive th e plot to give Laird a strange idea, just use Ronnie Anne's dad's apartment because apparently Ronnie Anne has never had friends over at her dad's place.  (I  made my comment, fight me!)  I'm glad that was the logical conclusion he gathered. So Ronnie Anne agrees to this plan.

This plan is to decorate the place with Laird stuff, which is interesting I think he likes cats. The friends are convinced that this is Larid's place and Sid really likes smoothies apparently. Then Sammer finds a box of chocolates for Ronnie Anne and now they think Laird and Ronnie Anne have a crush on each other. (That's kind of sweet)  This plan gets weirder, now the set up again where they are watching a scary movie.

Apparently, Ronnie Anne's dad had the time to come back just as they are using the apartment because that's how this pot works. Also, the fact that draw sticks and they had to stick their phones away in that drawer and Arturo calls Ronnie Anne when they aren't using their phones to call her to tell her that he' s back but only  when he's walking to his apartment is just weirdly convenient. He got attacked by dolphins, and also conveniently lost his keys  to be scary to make the kids think the movie killer is coming to get them.

The episode does drive up tension, though we already know the threat is just Ronnie Anne's dad, so it's not tense as it would have been. It still pretty funny for what happens and they finally find out that it's Ronnie Anne's dad.  Laird finally tells them the truth and the friends say they don't care where Laird lives and they'll still be friends.  They find out that Laird is rich and lives in a mansion. (What? That's right the answer was B)

I enjoyed this episode, Laird is an interesting character, not a wow character but still pretty fun. It's nice to give a little more about him since they want to use him more.  It was a pretty fun episode, I did see the reason coming from the point he said he was embarrassed, so  I wasn't surprised, but did forget about that part of the plot until they showed his place. It was a pretty fun episode.  Not Bad. I give it 8/10.

Episode 9b: Undivided Attention

This whole episode could have been solved if Carlos just took Carlota's phone away so she could focus on studying. In fact, that might have made the episode better.  Literally, this whole episode is Carlota is on her phone playing this fashion hunting game and not focusing on studying for her tests. Carlos notices this and decides the best course of action to get one of his college students to tutor her, and she mis hears it as a date. Again, this episode's solution all could have been Carlos takes away her phone. That could even work as a plot , like she feels confused and does things to distract herself while she's trying to study. They went for the stranger plot instead.

I will mention this, this episode was getting a historical mention of being the first series to feature a Lakota character.  (Thanks to Nick A  Live)This character named, Charles Little Bull, is the tutour for Carlota whom she thinks her dad put up as a date for her, and wants to get out from because she wants to play this game. She messes things up at the library getting them both kicked out and later, she thinks he a guy that doesn't give up easily and messed up stuff with the help of Sergio and causes confusion.

The game does have a good prize, that's why Carl starts to play it, and is the highlight of the episode because he really at least makes it somewhat entertaining. I'm saying the plot is otherwise dumb, it allows dumb decisions, and it really has some easy solutions that could have un done the whole plot meaning it's un helpful.   I mean, I do understand getting addicted to a game or something can cause confusion, dumb decisions, and more, but there wasn't that feeling in this episode that felt like that was their point.

The episode could have worked if they had made some tweaks and not have Carlota lose some some brain cells to make it work. Ronnie Anne points out their her uncle, Carlota's father, wouldn't be the kind of guy to arrange a date for her. Also, why did she think he was arranging a date when he just scolding her for not pay attention to her work?  She would know her own father by now and what he would do in a situation or not. At least fit the plot with logic, at least, fitting with the characterization and dynamic; I mean Carlota should have clarified or thought harder about her father saying it was a date.

I don't think it was a strong episode, that's disappointing, it had some potential, but missed out.   6.5/10

That's it for now, tune in next time when  we help Laird get stuck his vending machines.
