The Loud House Season 5: Episode 6: Season's Cheatings/ A Flipmas Carol

 The Loud House   Christmas Nickelodeon

Previously on The Loud House,   Lisa and Luna turn down fame. Read here

Now to episode 6a:  Season's Cheatings

The Loud House already had a Christmas special, but let's do two episode segments anyway! (alright then)

The Loud family has a gift exchange secret Santa, Lincoln tells us that, because they did this again which is always great to have Lincoln talk to the audience.  Lincoln wants  a backpack from his other favorite personality  Rip Hardcore  a fancy backpack. He wants to game the secret Santa to have Lilly be picked because the parents are the ones picking.  They do  a nice call back good season 1 episode "The Sweet Spot"

Of course to add some drama and plot, Rita announces that whomever Lilly gets will be getting something from Lilly herself. This makes Lincoln want to switch to who he thinks would be the next great sister , Leni.  He gets tackled by Lynn. (Because wants her Leni gift)   The Lincoln screaming the van gag is funny too.

The episode homages best episode, Cover Girls, and dresses like his mother and calls Lori and tries to convince her to be the Lincoln gift.  (Lori can't tell her own mother very well) That plan backfires because of Lori being so overworked, so he dresses like Lori to call Luan, because Luan is serious about gift giving. This works until it doesn't (because yes) and the puppet, Mr. Coconuts changes the plans.  (What?)  He undid his planning and goes to Luna, and decides to be more direct. It works!

Now remember, this is a gift exchange and well what did Lincoln forget? Yep! He forgot to get his gift for the selected member, being Lola. It's Christmas Eve and hurries to the mall the decides to close on him and mock him while closing. (like dang)  He goes to Burpin' Burger becuase that's where everyone goes when they forgot gifts.   (weird town)  Surprised he didn't go to Flips.

Chandler shows up  apparently was lurking around and offers an offer.  Lincoln offers up the backpack he got for the gift for Lola.  (This back pack flies? what the heck) Lilly sees this in the window.  Christmas Day happens and Lincoln is sad , but he's happy that Lola liked her gift of nice earrings.  Lilly gives Lincoln a sweet finger painting.

I like the little backgrounds of the characters giving gifts, Lisa and Lucy's spider exchange was a sweet bonding. This was an alright episode, Lincoln get distracted that he forgot a gift for Lola was well hinted, but you have to think about that in the back of your head.

The Chandler part is interesting because, Chandler was spending his time like waiting for someone to really need a gift (and hoping they needed fancy earrings? Unless he had other things) I do think it works, it shows Lincoln making a sacrifice after messing up and the episodes holds it that way. Chandler finds out it is a backpack and is happy he now has two. Again, Chandler could have said no I already have one, he could have said, fine I'll take the money, or something, it works because the episode is framed from Lincoln giving up the one thing he truly wanted to make sure his sister has a good Christmas. Chandler could have had the "Christmas spirit" and given it back, and just been nice, that would have been nice, but they weren't going for that in the story, and they could have used Clyde for that other scenario.  It's  a bittersweet thing because you, the viewer, would want a happy ending for Lincoln to get his backpack and Lola to get her great gift. Instead, they hopefully make the viewer think. It shows a depth to Lincoln's character that he screwed up, because he was so distracted by the great gift he wanted and that he'd rather lose that than have Lola, through no fault on her own part, have a miserable Christmas.  That show's that he is someone who cares and mature enough to understand that.  Chandler didn't have to offer anything, like why would he care if Lincoln's sister  was sad? He also didn't know about the backpack, so I'm kind of surprised.  He was quite flexible, somehow, he was like fine, I'll take the backpack. They left we some background questions.

The episode is pretty good, it has some nice hallmarks to it, and it's a simple episode with some sweet moments.  A little bit of comedy added in.   I give it 8/10.

 More after the Jump

Episode 6b: A Flipmas Carol

That's right, they are doing an episode based off the classic story.  ( A Tale of two cities)   Flip is the Scrooge role but playing his character as someone who kind of swindles people for money.  This part sets up the things like the messed up trees, the broken lights, messed up food, and messed up inflatables.  Lisa is fun in this part too, she knows the food is a little sketchy, but Lynn Sr. in a hurry.  Lynn Jr. is working for Flip to pay back a debt and tells her she has to work on Christmas too.

Sheryl and Meryl wish Flip guilt.  Now Flip goes to sleep and his haunted by ghost of Christmas past, Lisa! I like how cash is used to convince him. They go back to Flip's middle school Christmas dance and he wanted to dance with a cute girl , but didn't have  a ticket.  Scoots, is there and gives him a dodgy ticket and flowers. This messes up and awww poor fellow didn't get to dance with his gal. (I'm sad) That's when he became the swindler.

Lincoln and Clyde are ghosts of Christmas present. (Clyde name checks Dr. Lopez for the first time seasons)  They take Flip to see how his swindle messed up the people he swindled Christmas. He starts to feel guilty. The third ghost is Lucy, because that's the role she's made to play.  She shows him is future of a store that doesn't exist anymore, they got tired of him. (why weren't they before?)  Then we find out that Flip's name is Phillip Philippini.  Nobody is sad that's head and says he can change.

He fixes everything on Christmas, it's sweet.

Flip is an interesting character, he  kind of became someone's favorite character in the writing staff, he just had an episode with Lisa. so, I mean wow!  This episode does a good job at taking the elements of the Christmas story that everyone and their mother has used for a plot.  I'm not sure how much it fits into show canon, because that story of his past and losing his crush is sad as heck, though they seem to try and see if he could and call her in the present. It's a good episode 7.5/10.
