The Ghost and Molly McGee: Season 1 episode 11: Festival of Lights/ Saving Christmas

The Ghost and Molly McGee  Disney Christmas Hanukkah

"The Ghost and Molly McGree" is a new (at the time of this writing) Disney Channel animated series created by Bill Motz and Bob Roth, the show is about a girl named Molly and her family who move to a mid west town called Brighton.  The ghost in the series is named Scratch, the series sets up these two as an "odd couple" meaning different personalities at odds sometimes but slowly getting to be friends.

I may one day do episode looks at this series, but since I want do to seasonal posting (mmm pepper).  So we are skipping to episode 11. Thankfully, skipping a head in this series slightly doesn't make it too off putting to anyone new watching, but do watch the episodes before to get everything, it's that kind of show more than one you have to watch every episode in order to understand.

Episode 11a Festival of Lights

There's not much Hanukkah media in our media,  so it is something that this show is doing it. I will have say a few episodes back a character named Libby, who is Molly's friend, have her Bat Mitzvah, so it's not a surprise they would cover Hanukkah.

The episode starts at Libby's family bookstore as she has the McGee's over for the eight night of Hanukkah. After a well time power outage, Libby's mom sets up a generator and notices she forgot to get more fuel and has enough for 1 hour. (Oh, I see what they are doing)

It starts with the first hour and there's food, including a song with Scratch who loves the deep fried food from Hanukkah with Libby saying what they are called. This show has 1 or 2 songs every episode, this one is pretty fun.

Later, they play dreidel,  the McGee's in a spelling be trying to spell Hanukkah,  miracle boxes, giving a sweet moment with Scratch. The story of the holiday being told. Libby's mom brings up the history of her family and the menorah that was brought with them from Europe, during around World War II.

I liked how the generator lasted eight hours until the power came back on, it was well done.

This is a well done episode completely. I gives those who don't celebrate the holiday a  little look inside, and gives those that do, something special to watch. It shows the show's strength of nice mixture of slice of life, comedy, and heart. They packed a lot in the eleven minutes and made it a truly enjoyable experience.

If this was a normal post, I'd give it a rating, but I wasn't expecting to do that, but do watch it.

Episode 11b  Saving Christmas

Christmas huh?  This episode follows the McGee's having Christmas fun, the first one their new town. There's a snowflake celebration but things go bad when the mayor lights the tree and it sets on fire, and this also causes all the other lights to go out (because that's how that works) and apparently, things can't fixed since all the money was spent on the tree being 2 inches bigger than a competing town.

Molly, is an optimistic character and wants to find the bright side to fix something before giving up. When/if ever I write about episode 1, I'll write more about that, but I'll say I like her character balance she's not too optimistic where it either feels un-realistic or over the top, again a nice balance was set.

Here idea is to go the rich guy who own the fancy department store named Mr. Davenport. The man doesn't agree because he doesn't want to hand out "free joy" even when his daughter, Andrea, agrees but he  still says no.

Molly decides to do "A Christmas Carol" inspired thing to get him to change his mind. This part is fun, a great mixture of using Scratch as the various ghosts and having the McGee's playing different parts. It's fun to watch, but it doesn't make Mr. Davenport change his mind.

That makes Molly feel down and Scratch decides  a different tactic by trying to beat the Christmas spirit into him. (Season's Beatings)  He notices that his daughter is sad because she wanted to be the Snowflake princess and he feels bad and it works.

The episode has a nice song, giving the town a Christmas make over again.   This was a nice Christmas spirted episode, I liked how it used "A Christmas Carol" as part of it's story, while also showing how close Scratch has gotten with Molly to care for her. It  gives it's own story while doing some of the things you see in Christmas specials and episode. It packs a lot in it's 11 minutes too. Another good episode.

Do give it watch and check out the series, that's it for now, tune in  next time when we wonder how a ghost can eat.
